Allow me to take a step away from aggregating the latest in office accessories for a moment. Let’s talk practical history. In fact, lets talk chemistry. People started writing with ink using goose feathers called quill pens. Goose feathers are hollow in the middle and can hold ink through capillary action. Dip the feather in a reservoir of ink and a fresh new supply rises to the top. And if you dab the filled feather near a porous piece of paper, the ink will draw out of the feather and absorb into the paper. Quite an effective technology for the olden days.

Nobody wanted their feathers lying around on the desk making a mess when the ink leaks out. So they invented the modern pen stand. They would put the feather into the pen stand and as long as the bottom of the feather wasn’t touching a surface, the ink would stay in the feather.

Contrast that with today’s modern pens. Ballpoint pens are fairly leak proof but can cause a mess and roll off the table if not stored in a cup or stand. So do justice to the pen, store it responsibly in an attractive holder.

The gift giving season has begun and a personalized 2010 pen holder is quite memorable. Many retailers will carve a personalized message into a metal plate. They will fit whatever you can write onto it.

Another option is to use a photo dated with 2010 somewhere, or has a picture of a vacation you took in 2010. The other option is to put a picture of a new baby inside. Close family can remember what year the baby was born.

Lastly, if you have time, try to make your own pencil cup. It can be as easy as painting an old soup can and writing on the outside with a permanent marker. You can even write 2010 somewhere on the pen cup. Christmas is coming soon, begin preparing your pen holder gifts now.
